What are the tryout procedures for Dulles Dynamo?

Answer: We will hold two 2-hour sessions for the U12 tryouts. Tryouts will consist of individual drills to assess dribbling, ball-handling, layups, shooting, and overall athleticism. Tryouts will also consist of scrimmage and competitive play. Be prepared to showcase your skills and athleticism during the tryout sessions. It is highly encouraged to attend both sessions, however, a player must attend at least one tryout to be considered. 

What are the age and grade requirements for U12 AAU basketball?

Answer: U12 typically refers to players born between September 1 of the previous year and August 31 of the current year. For Dulles Dynamo the age cut off is under 12 by April 1, 2024

How competitive are U12 AAU leagues?

Answer: The level of competition can vary greatly depending on the league, division, and specific teams involved. Some leagues cater to beginners, while others are highly competitive and attract talented players from across the region. Dynamo U12 Boys will play in both developmental and competitive leagues and tournaments.

How much travel is involved in AAU basketball?

Answer: The amount of travel depends on the tournament schedule and locations. Expect regional tournaments, and potentially national events  top teams. Be prepared for potential road trips and factor travel costs into your budget.

What are the costs associated with playing AAU basketball?

Answer: Dulles Dynamo U12 Boys 2024 season will cost each player roughly $2500, which is in line with other travel teams. The fees are dependent upon the number of players selected, the number of practices per week, the tournaments selected, and coach and trainer fees.  

How many tournaments will we play?

Answer: Our emphasis is on player and talent development, and building a cohesive and competitive team. For our inaugural season, we’re not rushing to play in tournaments from the first (or second) month, until the Head Coach deems the team is ready. 

How much practice time is committed to AAU basketball?

Answer: For an effective program, we will hold two 2-hour practices per week on weekdays to allow for games and tournaments on the weekends. This may be fluid in the beginning until facilities are secured. 

What kind of playing time can my child expect if selected for the team?

Answer:  There are no guarantees of playing time in competitive leagues. Coaches strive for balanced playing time, but individual situations and player development needs may influence playing time distribution.

Where will practices be held?

Answer: Initially, practices will be held at a mix of gyms. We will primarily practice at LCPS or FCPS facilities in the Dulles/Herndon/Loudoun areas. We ask for a high degree of flexibility until the longer-term practice schedule is published. We are working to reserve and secure long-term space. 

Do you have teams for other age groups?

Answer: Our initial team is for U12 boys. Depending on interest, demand, and coach, and facility availability, we can add additional teams for youth boys and girls. Over the course of the next couple of seasons, we fully expect to have additional teams.  Contact us directly if you are interested. 

Are coaches volunteers?

What are the benefits of playing AAU basketball?

Participating in AAU basketball can offer several benefits, including developing basketball skills, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship, gaining competitive experience, and potentially gaining exposure to college scouts (although rare for U12). Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to participate depends on your individual goals and priorities.
